The Auvergne sapphire

Usually small, Auvergne sapphires were carried toward the surface by the volcanic activity of France's Massif Central, then concentrated in river gravels, especially around Le Puy-en-Velay. The one in Gentiane was recovered during an expedition, then cut in Auvergne; unheated and untreated, it keeps its natural color.

On video: sapphire hunting and cutting the sapphire.

Color may vary. Unheated and untreated, each Auvergne sapphire keeps its natural color, somewhere between green, yellow and blue. Every stone is unique: the ring is made subject to the sapphires available in our workshop.

Bague Gentiane posée sur une pierre claire

The Story

The name of a flower of Auvergne, a sapphire of Auvergne

Gentiane is named after a wildflower of the mountain pastures of Auvergne, the region its sapphire comes from. Its eight-pointed star-shaped head holds two halos of diamonds and, at the center, a 0.45-carat Auvergne sapphire, unheated and untreated. An engagement ring that can also be worn every day, shaped and set by hand in our workshop in Saumur, France.

The Flower

A star of gold

Gentiane is named after a wildflower of the mountain pastures of Auvergne, the region its sapphire comes from.

Its head forms an eight-pointed star, edged with fine beads of gold. It holds a first halo of eight diamonds, then a second of thirty-two: two crowns of light around the sapphire.

The Stone

A sapphire just as Auvergne made it

At its center sits a 0.45-carat Auvergne sapphire. It was recovered during an expedition, then cut in Auvergne.

It has been neither heated nor treated: its color, somewhere between green, yellow and blue, is entirely natural. No two Gentiane rings are quite alike: the color of your stone may differ from the photos, and each ring is made subject to the sapphires available in our workshop.

Filing

The file draws the flower

At the bench, the star-shaped gallery is cut with a saw, then refined with a file to draw each of its eight points.

Soldering

Gold joined in the flame

The star-shaped head and the band are joined by soldering: in the flame, a gold solder unites them into a single piece. The ring then goes into the bath.

Polishing

The mount takes on its shine

Before receiving its stones, the mount is fitted with a small rubber wheel, then polished with a disc and on the polishing motor.

Setting

Forty diamonds, one sapphire

The setter places the eight 1.8 mm diamonds one by one, then the thirty-two 0.9 mm diamonds, and pushes over the metal that holds them. The Auvergne sapphire goes in last, into its prongs.

The diamonds are natural or lab-grown, as you prefer; the gold is recycled 18k (750) or 14k (585), yellow, rose or white. Designed as an engagement ring, Gentiane can also be worn on its own, every day.

We did not choose the color of this sapphire: we left it just as Auvergne made it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What color will my sapphire be?

Unheated and untreated, every Auvergne sapphire keeps its natural color, somewhere between green, yellow and blue. The color of your stone may therefore differ from the photos. Each ring is made subject to the sapphires available in our workshop.

Natural or lab-grown diamonds: what is the difference?

A natural diamond is mined from the earth; a lab-grown diamond is made by people, in a laboratory. Both have the same composition and the same hardness. Both are offered for the halos of Gentiane; the center stone is always a natural Auvergne sapphire.

Can Gentiane be worn every day?

Yes. Designed as an engagement ring, it can also be worn on its own, every day. Remove it before swimming, exercising or applying perfume, and clean it with a soft cloth.

18k (750) or 14k (585) gold: what is the difference?

18k gold (750) contains 75% pure gold; 14k gold (585) contains 58.5%. Gentiane is available in both, in yellow, rose or white gold.

How long does delivery take?

Each piece is made by hand in our workshop in Saumur after you order. Allow 5 weeks for delivery in France and 7 weeks for international delivery, from the date of your order.

How do I find my ring size?

French ring sizes correspond to the circumference of the finger in millimeters. Measure the base of your finger with a strip of paper, ideally at the end of the day, then refer to the size guide on the product page, which gives indicative US and UK equivalents. If in doubt, write to our workshop.

Can I cancel my order or exchange a piece?

Yes. You have 30 days from receipt of your piece to cancel your order or exchange it, under the terms set out in articles 3 and 17 of our terms of sale.

What warranty covers my jewelry?

Our jewelry is covered by the two-year legal guarantee of conformity from delivery, as well as the warranty against hidden defects, under the conditions set out in our terms of sale.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes: we ship to the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the European Union. The price shown includes taxes and, outside the European Union, import duties. Insured delivery is free on orders of €1,000 or more; allow 7 weeks from the date of your order. For any question, write to us.
