  • Finding Your Ring Size: Methods That Work

    Written by: L'atelier NAGOYA

A well-fitted ring is one you forget you are wearing: it slides over the knuckle with slight resistance and does not spin on the finger. Here is how to find your size, at home or at our workshop.

    What a ring size measures

In France, a ring size is the circumference of the finger in millimeters. A finger circumference of 52 mm therefore gives a size FR 52. Sizes are the same for everyone, whichever hand will wear the ring.

    Method 1: measure your finger

Wrap a strip of paper or a soft tape measure around the base of your finger, without pulling it tight. Mark where it overlaps, then measure the length with a ruler: that is your size.

If your knuckle is noticeably wider than the base of your finger, measure there too: the ring will need to slide over it. Repeat the measurement two or three times to check the result.

Method 2: measure a ring you already own

This is the ideal method for a gift, since it is hard to measure someone’s finger without giving the surprise away. Measure the inner diameter of a ring worn on the same finger, at its widest point, then refer to the chart below. It comes down to tenths of a millimeter, so measure several times.

    French size Inner diameter (mm)
    44 14.0
    46 14.6
    48 15.3
    50 15.9
    52 16.6
    54 17.2
    56 17.8
    58 18.5
    60 19.1
    62 19.7

    Method 3: ring sizers

A ring sizer is a set of rings in different sizes that you try on one by one. There are also adjustable plastic sizers, sold for a small price, and printable sizers: check the scale of the printout, as the accuracy of the measurement depends on it. A ring mandrel, a graduated cone on which you slide a ring, gives the size of a ring you already own.

    The surest method: our workshop

Nothing replaces a fitting with a professional, who takes into account the shape of your fingers and the width of the ring you have chosen. We are happy to welcome you to our Saumur workshop to take your size.

    Our tips

    • Measure at room temperature, preferably at the end of the day: fingers swell in the heat and shrink in the cold.
    • Measure the finger on the right hand: sizes often differ between the left and the right hand.
    • If you are between two sizes, choose the larger one, or write to us.

Our rings are made to order, in the size you choose: the available sizes are listed on each product page, as for Gentiane or the Julie ring.

Would you rather talk it over in person? We welcome you by appointment at our workshop, 44 rue de Rouen in Saumur, France, or you can write to us from our contact page.
