The Story

A Loire meadow flower turned emblem

Every spring, in the meadows the Loire covers in winter, a bell-shaped flower with a purple checkered pattern rises from the grass. In Anjou, it is called the Gogane. NAGOYA made it its emblem, and the collection that bears its name takes up its design, from the most discreet to the most precious.

The flower

The checkered fritillary

The checkered fritillary, Fritillaria meleagris, is a bell-shaped flower that nods at the tip of a slender stem. Its petals carry a checkered pattern, purple or more rarely white, which gives it its French name: it recalls the plumage of the guinea fowl.

This shape, a tilted bell and its checkerboard, is the one the house chose to draw its jewelry. In France, it is found mainly in the wet meadows of the great river valleys.

The Loire meadows

After the floods

The fritillary grows in damp meadows, the ones the Loire and its tributaries cover in winter. When the water recedes, the flower appears, from late March into April.

Around Saumur, these flood meadows are part of the landscape. The flower is awaited every spring: a sign of the season that people of the valley know well. It is not for picking: it is admired where it grows, for as long as it blooms.

The Anjou name

Known as the Gogane

In Anjou, the checkered fritillary has a name of its own: the Gogane. The house chose this name for its emblem flower and for the collection.

The flower also appears in the town's heritage: it can be found on the roof finial of the Château de Saumur. An architectural detail that links the meadow flower to the history of Saumur.

The emblem

From flower to jewel

Within the collection, the Gogane takes a different form on each piece: engraved in relief on the Julie ring, traced in diamonds on the halo ring, repeated like a ribbon on the Riban-belle necklace, worn alone as a pendant on the Gogane necklace.

All these pieces are handmade in our Saumur workshop in 18k gold (750), and most come in yellow, white or rose gold.

We wanted an emblem that comes from here, from the Loire and its meadows.
